This paper will present the interpretative approach of my forthcoming commentary on the Song of Songs (Zondervan, ZECOT). The Song of Songs is a poetical wisdom composition in the tradition of Solomon that serves as the correlate to the approach of Proverbs 1–9, especially Proverbs 5 and 7. With this interpretation, the woman of the Song is presented with two options, marriage to the beloved shepherd (Genesis 2) or “marriage” into the harem of Solomon as a concubine (1 Kings 11). At the end of the Song, the woman rejects the enticement of Solomon and teaches her students that God has designed the covenant of marriage in Genesis 2 to be both rock sold in terms of commitment and white hot in terms of intimacy. Marriage taking this path of wisdom are better prepared to endure hardship, resist temptation, and promote wholeness (shalom) in this broken world. This interpretation fits well into the OT wisdom tradition, upholds an orthodox view of the covenant of marriage, and presents the woman of the Song as the true teacher of wisdom.
