One New Man – The Purpose of Christ in Ephesians

In this paper, I will explore the significance of Christ’s purpose to create “one new man,” as taught by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:14-18. Some Pauline scholars, like Paula Fredriksen, believe that the theological vision of Ephesians 2 cannot be reconciled with the apostle Paul’s vision of the relationship between Jews and Gentiles found in the undisputed Pauline corpus. I, however, believe that the vision of “one new man” in Ephesians 2:14-18 squares well with Paul’s understanding of the eschatological people of God. In my paper, I will demonstrate that Christ’s “creative” purpose in Ephesians 2:14-18 expands upon the imagery of the church as the body of Christ in 1 Corinthians and presents Christ as the last Adam who recreates what was lost in the fall of man.
