The Doctrine of Original Sin and the LDS Church

“The Doctrine of Original Sin and the LDS Church”

The purpose of this paper is to prove why believing in the doctrine of original sin is necessary to be considered as a part of the Christian religion, and how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ (LDS/Mormon) view of original sin reveals why they are not a Christian religion.

This paper first introduces the orthodox view of original sin using both the Old Testament and New Testament, mainly in the passages of Genesis 3 and Romans 5. Both texts prove the doctrine as biblical, and that it is necessary to believe in to be considered a Christian.

The paper then gives an account of the LDS view of original sin as found in their scriptures as well as the writings from their leaders and theologians. This section begins with their version of the sin of Adam and Eve, and the view reveals why they believe mankind is born innocent. The sin of Adam and Eve in their opinion also allowed what they call agency (free will), and this paper discusses how the LDS version of this event was necessary for their understanding of salvation. Yet, not only was the Fall necessary for salvation, but, as they teach, it is to be considered a blessing for mankind. Both agency and the LDS view of Adam and Eve’s sin is foundational in their rejection of the orthodox doctrine of original sin.

The essay continues and answers the overall question of whether the LDS Church is a Christian religion based upon their false view of the doctrine of original sin. This section, using both LDS leaders/scholars and biblical scholars, proves the LDS Church does not understand the orthodox view of original sin, nor do they affirm it. This section also discusses why this doctrine is necessary for all who claim to be Christian. The assessment then is that the LDS Church is not a Christian religion.
In conclusion, I reiterate the biblical view of the doctrine of original sin and the aberrant view of the LDS Church, once again revealing how they are not a Christian religion based upon their lack of belief in this doctrine. I then end the paper by encouraging believers to stand up for the truth of the Scriptures and the truth of the doctrine of original sin.
