Following the incident of the golden calf in Exodus 32, God gave Moses a fuller revelation of Himself which underscored both His grace and His certain judgment against sinners. The text the paper will consider, Exodus 34:6–7, informs both the biblical-theological storyline and theology proper. Indeed, vv. 6–7 are cited some 27 times in the OT; and, while not directly cited in the NT, certainly inform the NT knowledge of God. The proposed paper will argue for a biblical theology of Exodus 34:6–7 along three lines. First, the paper will set the passage in the storyline of Exodus, with due consideration given to its grammatical features. Second, the paper will trace a representative number of citations and/or allusions to 34:6–7, seeking to answer the question, “How, if at all, do these verses shape the presentation of YHWH’s nature in the Law, Prophets, and Writings?” Finally, the paper will seek to apply these discoveries in the NT, with special reference given to the balance struck between God’s grace and His righteous judgment against transgressors.
