In this essay, I argue that John Owen’s views of the Old Testament’s inherent Christological frame of reference and the nature of the literal sense of holy Scripture can correct and guide our own reading of Scripture today. Though quality work has been done on John Owen’s hermeneutics (e.g., Tweeddale, Howson, McGraw, Knapp, Hindsman), a need still exists for a careful development of Owen’s view of the Christological nature of the OT and its relation to his formulation of the literal sense of Scripture. To fill this gap, I will first present from a variety of Owen’s works the nature of his belief that the OT’s frame of reference has always been intrinsically Christo-centric, with all of God’s OT saints believing in and hoping for the coming Redeemer. Secondly, I will show how this Christological frame of reference relates to Owen’s understanding of the literal sense of Scripture. Lastly, I will briefly suggest how we may learn today from Owen in these areas.
