Salvation or subjugation of all nations: Roman imperialism as a counterfeit great commission

This paper will present the iconography and architectural statement of the Sebasteion, a first century Roman temple complex in Aphrodisias dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite and the Julio-Claudian imperial family. Over 200 marble reliefs depict the Roman conception of “all nations” and celebrate their subjugation to Roman power. This complex, and others like it, were built by local leaders and created public spaces in the cities of early Christian missionary activity. The imagery of the Sebasteion will then be used as a hermeneutical lens for understanding the language of Jesus’ great commission in Matthew 28 and the fulfillment of the eschatological salvation for “all nations” depicted in the book of Revelation.
