The Nicene Creed has been considered the most authoritative and most ecumenical creed within the global Christian movement. For this very reason, theologians, especially evangelical theologians, have been reluctant to deal critically with the Nicene Creed. However, this is not the right attitude for evangelicals who are committed to the principle of sola scriptura. We have a responsibility to critically evaluate any human creed, or confession of faith from a biblical perspective. In this light, this paper will critically discuss the Nicene Creed’s affirmation of “baptism for the fortiveness of sins” as unbiblical. It will then argue that “baptism for the forgiveness of sins” should be changed to “faith for the forgiveness of sins” or “baptism as a sign or symbol of the forgiveness of sins.”
