Faithful theological higher education should benefit Christ’s universal church and serve as an agent for extending the church’s mission on earth. How does God’s Word describe the nature and function of theological higher education? Wrestling both exegetically and theologically, this study addresses: (1) the place of theological higher education in church history; (2) Scripture as the foundation of theological education; (3) the supreme goal of theological higher education; (4) the process of theological education; (5) objectives and assessment within theological education; (6) theological education and the church’s mission. This paper captures the fruits of Scriptural wrestling during my frontline involvement in the founding of Bethlehem College & Seminary, my decades of academic ministry at three schools, my training of church leaders and helping theological training centers overseas, and my pastoral roles and teaching within several local churches.
