This paper examines the axiology of Philippians in a complete way. Semantically, the axiological terminology in Philippians covers the areas of meaning dealing with a) being of value/ lacking it (ἔντιμος, ὑπερέχω, δοκιμή, ἀπώλεια) b) being worthy (ἀξίως), c) being good/bad (ἀγαθός, κρείσσων, κακός) and d) being advantageous/not advantageous (περισσεύω, ὑστερέω). Based on these areas of meaning, theologically, the axiological terminology elucidates Paul’s axiology being applied to pastoral ministry.
A) Your brothers and sisters in Christ should be honored (2.29), others should be counted more significant than ourselves (2.3), the personal knowledge of Christ has a surpassing worth (3.8), and the peace of God surpasses all understanding (4.7). Some among us have proven their worth (2.22), but some will experience destruction (1.28; 3.19).
B) Our lives need to be lived in such a way that they are worthy of the gospel (1.27).
C) The work started by God in our lives is good and he will bring it to completion (1.6). Departing and being with Christ is far better (1.23). But others are evildoers (3.2).
D) Our love may abound more and more (1.9), the presence of Paul among them will be advantageous (1.26), and the gift received by Paul from them is a full payment and more (4.18). He has learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need (4.12).
