The unique feature of Johannine eschatology – the tension between the present and the future, with a significant focus on the present age – is well reflected in John 3:36, which describes two destinies: eternal life or the wrath of God. Two further aspects of this verse have been largely overlooked by scholars: (1) the present dimension of God’s wrath and (2) its Old Testament background. This article seeks to determine the meaning of the wrath that remains in John 3:36 in light of the Old Testament. Through exegetical analysis and intertextual exploration, I highlight various aspects of God’s wrath in the Old Testament as they manifest in the present lives of sinners. I argue that John draws on this rich background to warn the disobedient of both the personal and corporate manifestations of God’s wrath in the present age, which will ultimately lead to their annihilation on the last day.
