Scholars such as Matthias Konradt and Charles Quarles have studied Matthew’s presentation of Jesus as the Son of Abraham and highlighted this title as important to Christology. However, despite these studies, this particular Christological title seems to remain to be explored.
In this paper, I intend to demonstrate that Jesus’ title, Son of Abraham, in Matthew, reveals an important feature of his Christological nature as it relates to his role as a prophet who follows the divine Will and instructs others to do the same. For example, Abraham is referred to as a prophet in Genesis 20:7. Thus, I will attempt to demonstrate that Jesus’ role as a prophet who hears, speaks, and follows the Word of God corresponds to Abraham in the OT.
In addition, I will attempt to show how this Biblical Pentecostal theme applies to the Pentecostal church. As prophetic people, Christians must hear, speak, and follow the Word of God for their lives. In doing this, they follow the example of Jesus, the Son of Abraham.
