The Chalcedonian Creed (451) has been considered the most authoritative and most ecumenical creed of the Christian movement throughout the world. For this very reason, theologians, especially evangelical theologians, have been reluctant to deal critically with the Chalcedonian Creed. However, this is not the right attitude for evangelicals who are committed to the principle of sola scriptura. We have a responsibility to critically evaluate any human creed, doctrine, or statement of faith from a biblical perspective. In this light, this paper will critically discuss whether the Chalcedonian Creed’s affirmation of Mary as “Mary, the Mother of God” is unbiblical. It will then argue that the phrase “Mary, the Mother of God” should be changed to “Mary, the Mother of Christ” or “Mary, the Mother of the Humanity of Jesus Christ”.
