The Nicene Creed (325 AD) celebrates 1700 years this year, 2025. The Christological doctrine of hypostatic union defending the divinity of Jesus Christ and his full humanity has been challenged throughout the history of the church. Even during the Reformation, specifically the English Puritans, the doctrine of hypostatic union was tested. It was in this theological situation where John Bunyan (1628-1688) defended Christ’s full divinity and full humanity against false teachings like the Quakers. How did Bunyan, a Puritan Baptist preacher, formulate his Christology? This paper presents Bunyan’s Christology through a thorough investigation of his first published work, ‘Some Gospel Truths Opened, According to the Scriptures, Or, the Divine and Human Nature of Christ Jesus’. The paper posits that Bunyan’s Christology can be summarized using his phrase, “The Christ of God,” and is in agreement with the Nicene formula: “[Christ] is very God, co-eternal, and also co-equal with his Father,” in Bunyan’s words.
