2 Kings 22:8-11 tells a remarkable story of how the Book of the Law was found in the temple; it had been lost for many years, both literally and philosophically. As a result, Judah had been led into sin. Today, the United States—and churches in general—can be said to have “lost” the Word of God, both literally and philosophically. Like Judah, society has suffered. In this study recent findings from “The State of Theology” (an ongoing survey by Ligionier Ministries and LifeWay Research) and Gallup will show that in both the general culture and among evangelicals, the Bible has been set aside as the foundational text—leading to widespread biblical illiteracy. The consequences of such a “famine in the land” (Amos 8:11) could be as severe as was the case with Judah. Fortunately, as long as there is time there is hope for restoration and renewal. A case will be made for true revival—not of human philosophy, nor esoteric theology, but of the simple and clear words of Jehovah, carried out by devoted people who wish to remake both the culture and religion into what God wants. This is not accomplished by political means, but rather by the undenominational body of Jesus Christ; true and lasting restoration can only happen when Jehovah’s desires become our desires.
