This paper seeks to explore the way Hebrews 1 shows us that the Son is God in the same way that the Father is God while distinguishing between the persons of the Father and the Son. This concept is formalized in the Nicene-Constantinople Creed, particularly with the Son being “Light from Light” and Homoousia with the Father. However, as evangelicals our highest authority comes from Scripture and the authority of the Creeds is derivative. We will seek to show that while the Creedal language of homoousia is certainly a later development, the high Christology of Hebrews 1 leads us to affirm that the words of the Creed rightly convey the metaphysical concepts articulated in the Creed. We will pushback against recent scholarship that tries to shy away from seeing an ontology of divine Sonship in Hebrews 1.Both Hebrews 1 and Nicene convey the same concepts even with the variance of historical context and language.
