Proverbs 8 was a key text in Pro-Arian arguments for the begetting of the Son in time, as seen even in the succinct example from Eusebius of Nicomedia’s “Letter to Paulinus of Tyre.” The refutation of such interpretations in Pro-Nicene argumentation reveals how Pro-Nicene theologians made their own use of Proverbs 8 by placing it in the context of other Scriptures, notably Colossians 1 and Hebrews 1. The juxtaposition of Pro-Arian and Pro-Nicene argumentation related to these texts highlights the tension between image language and time, a tension that led to the development of the Pro-Nicene theology of eternal generation. This paper explores the use of these texts in Eusebius’ “Letter to Paulinus” and Athanasius’ “Orations Against the Arians” to argue that the Son as the ”image” of the Father was a key element in Pro-Nicene argumentation vis-à-vis Pro-Arian use of Proverbs 8, and was, in fact, a primary theological mechanism by which to secure an understanding of the Son as homoousion with the Father, even despite the fact that image language does not appear in the Creed itself.
