This paper will examine women’s rights in Islam. The primary texts that will be analyzed include the Qur’an and its tafsir as well as the Hadith and Sira, as Muhammad’s treatment of women and his teachings on marriage and divorce are crucial to understanding the foundational Islamic view of women. Additionally, this paper will compare the claims of traditional and progressive Muslim scholars regarding their interpretations of these texts, demonstrating the contradictions and tensions between these two perspectives. The methodology of the progressive Muslim scholars raises a significant concern as their endorsement of the reinterpretation of Islamic texts undermines the historical authenticity and authority of Islamic teachings. Furthermore, this approach to interpreting selective texts and overlooking problematic passages raises questions about the credibility and reliability of their methodology. A close examination of Islamic primary texts and a critical evaluation of Muslim scholars’ approaches are essential for an honest and scholarly discussion on women’s rights in Islam.
