Description
This is an entry written for the Dictionary of Christianity and Science. It first provides a definition and objectives of the social sciences, and then describes the history of the social sciences beginning with their emergence in the nineteenth century. Finally, it describes theology’s engagement with the social sciences and concludes that the social sciences can be a helpful partner in enabling theology to be more relevant and effective in confronting social issues such as poverty, gender, ethnicity, and others.
