Description
James De Young has written (2020) the most comprehensive book on the Antichrist and the end times. Focusing on the five books of the Bible where the Antichrist appears (Daniel; Matthew 24-25; 2 Thess 2; 1-2 John; Revelation), he delivers a new approach to prophecy of the end of history. Starting with what the Bible witnesses about the Antichrist he traces the issues of the ten-nation confederacy over which the Antichrist will rule; the Rapture of the church; the Great Tribulation; the Day of the Lord, the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, the rebirth of the nation of Israel, the Battle of Armageddon, the millennial reign of Jesus Christ, and the new heavens and earth. From the Apostle Paul in 2 Thessalonians 2 De Young discovers that (1) the revealing of the Antichrist is the most clear-cut sign that the end times have arrived; (2) the present restrainer of the Antichrist is government—presently the USA; and (3) the “mystery of lawlessness” is presently at work. This terminology leads back to the Book of Daniel. De Young asserts that Daniel is the key to biblical prophecy, and that the concept of “mystery” is the key to the Book of Daniel and is the seed thought to all the many uses of the word in the New Testament.
Presently the Antichrist with his coming world-wide rule and persecution is restrained but the “signs of the times” of which Jesus spoke (Matthew 16:1-4) are clearer than ever before. The present pandemic and failing economies give fair warning of what the end times will be like. They are days of plagues, wars, distress, unrest, earthquakes, meteorites, punishments; people will faint from fear (just as Jesus warned: Luke 21:26).
De Young unravels how the prophecies of the end of the world dovetail together. He seeks to empower every Christian with the truth and the hope we have anchored in our heavenly citizenship. He shows the advantages of the premillennial, literal approach to the interpretation of prophecy over the amillennial, figurative approach to prophecy. He makes a strong defense of the sixth-century dating and the integrity of the book of Daniel. Five charts trace the Greek and Persian rulers, Israel’s persecution by six Gentile empires, the views for interpretation of Daniel 9, and the many elements of the profile of the Antichrist. Two appendices trace the Antichrist as found in the OT Pseudepigrapha and in the Apostolic Fathers.
