A Better Story: The Goodness of a Gender Binary as Male and Female

The story of transgenderism has won over the culture, and it is beginning to win over the church. It is no longer acceptable to believe that human persons can only be defined as a binary gender of male and female. The idea that a gender binary as male and female is good is seen as hate speech, harmful, damaging, and the cause of self-harm and even suicide. If we are to flourish as human beings, we must embrace a non-binary understanding of gender and promote all forms in allowing one’s gender identity to match with their physical bodies, even if that means surgery and desecration of the human body. The Transgender story is convincing our culture, but is it true? Is it good? Is it beautiful?

I will argue that the Bible communicates a better story about sexuality and gender. This story describes human flourishing through the goodness of a gender binary as male and female. By walking through Scriptural plot points of creation, incarnation and redemption; and resurrection and restoration, I will demonstrate the goodness of a gendered binary and why it is necessary for human flourishing.

I will conclude by answering objections from Megan DeFranza, one of the leading scholars who promotes embracing a non-binary understanding of gender to enable us to flourish as humans. In the end, the rejection of a gender binary rejects the goodness of God’s creation, the blessing of the incarnation and redemption in Christ, and the beauty of the resurrection hope of our resurrected bodies. It is only through embracing a gender binary as male and female that we will be able to flourish, enjoy, and live out our sexuality in the way God intended us to.
