Comparing the Greek and Hebrew Discourse Structure of Haggai

Discourse Analysis was developed in the 1970s and 80s, when leaders in the field (like Longacre and van Dijk) set theory and methods in place. Nevertheless, only in the last decade or so has there been real traction in applying discourse methods not just to paragraphs or pericopes but to look at book-level discourse features. In particular, it remains an open question whether anthologies, such as most prophetic books, can have an overarching discourse structure. Building on analysis of MT Haggai that I presented at a conference in Dallas in October 2023, I compare the book-level discourse features in Hebrew and the LXX translation of this short anthology of 4 oracles to see how (or if) the translators communicated the overall structure and meaning of the book.
