Description

Before applying, please read the requirements for full membership carefully.

Full members must have earned a Ph.D, Th.D., or other research doctorate in biblical or theological studies from an accredited institution and must affirm the ETS Doctrinal Basis (see below). The educational requirement has two components: degree level and type (Ph.D. or Th.D., not professional doctorates), and academic discipline (biblical studies, theology, or related disciplines). Only full members have voting privileges. The ETS Bylaws (Art III, Sec 1 [c]) allows for exceptions to the degree requirement for membership in exceptional cases based on similar qualifications through writing, teaching, or academic administration in the area of biblical or theological studies at evangelical educational institutions.

In general, for a body of publications to warrant full membership it must:

  • Be indicative of a level of biblical scholarship commensurate with Ph.D. in biblical or theological studies
  • Contribute to the academic literature of biblical or theological studies
  • Demonstrate fluency in the tools, methods, history and literature of biblical or theological scholarship
  • Be published through a peer review process in an established academic journal or by an established academic press

Publications that are self-published, of a strictly pastoral nature, written for a non-academic audience, or not primarily based on biblical or theological research are not sufficient to support a case for full membership. These guidelines do not diminish the value of contributions that fall outside these criteria. Rather, these guidelines seek to delimit the type of writings that might serve as a substitute for the academic study and competency represented by a Ph.D in biblical or theological studies.

ETS Doctrinal Basis: The Bible alone, and the Bible in its entirety, is the Word of God written and is therefore inerrant in the autographs. God is a Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each an uncreated person, one in essence, equal in power and glory.
